Even if one spouse decides to delay collecting retirement benefits until age 70, he or she can file for spousal benefits at 66. 
That boosts household income by half of the full retirement benefit the other spouse is already collecting. 
Meanwhile, the delayed retirement benefit continues to increase by 8% per year up to age 70.
